One of the latest Intraocular lenses (IOLs) to be granted FDA approval is the Envy range by Bausch + Lomb. There are currently two options, but this is expected to increase over the coming months and years. Officially called enVista Envy by B&L, the lenses have been designed using cutting-edge technology to overcome many of the historical side effects of more traditional IOLs.

The current range of Envy by B&L lenses includes both a multifocal option and a “Toric” version that can also correct astigmatism.

What is the Envy by B&L lens range?

Envy by B&L is a range of lenses that have recently been launched in the US. They are monofocal lenses with advanced capabilities that reduce many of the issues that older IOLs are known for. These include issues with glare, seeing halos, and other light-related issues.

The lenses use patented technology, such as ActivSync Optic and ClearPath, to achieve this. There are different versions of the Envy lenses available, including one that can also treat mild levels of astigmatism—the enVista Envy Toric Lens.

How do the Envy by B&L lenses work?

The lenses use cutting-edge technology to provide a superior level of vision when compared to other monofocal lenses. This is achieved by:

• Being made from a single piece of hydrophobic acrylic: This actively repels liquid, preventing spots or reflections from glistening on the lens. Indeed, this is the only lens that the FDA has reported as having no glistening whatsoever during extensive testing and examinations.
• Advanced design: The lenses in the range are incredibly close to the natural curvature of the eye. They’re also up to 300% more resistant to compression, compared to similar types. This results in improved light sensitivity and exceptional visual clarity.
• Provides unparalleled accuracy at a single distance: Typically designed with a far-distance prescription, the lens provides incredible vision—even in low-light conditions. It may be necessary to pair the lens with prescription eyeglasses for close-up tasks.

Will the Envy by B&L lenses be suitable for me?

When it comes to advanced monofocal IOLs, the Envy by B&L range is suitable for the vast majority of cataract operations. While certain conditions, such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, may be a contraindication, this is something that can only be determined by an expert cataract surgeon.

In general, the Envy by Bausch + Lomb range will suit anyone who:

• Wants to benefit from excellent long-distance vision.
• Is potentially prepared to support their vision with eyeglasses for close-up focus.
• May suffer from astigmatism, as well as cataracts (in which case, the Toric-specific lens may suit).
• Wants to reduce the likelihood of historical cataract lens issues that occur from light, such as glare, halos, and starbursts (93% of those fitted with the Envy by B&L lens reported little to no issues with this).

Although the Envy by B&L IOL is a monofocal lens, 94% of those with them report little to no problems with close-up vision.
