I needed cataract surgery in one eye. For several years I had allowed Dr. Dao to schedule an exam every 4 months. I only wanted the basics that Medicare would pay for. He insisted that I pay an additional $1000 for a laser scalpel because there could be complications from taking Flowmax. I got a second opinion from a surgeon in Encinitas. That surgeon said there was no need for the laser and it could all be paid for by Medicare. Also thought that an exam every 4 months was not necessary. I told Dr. Dao that I only wanted services Medicare would pay for. Three days before surgery I went for my pre-surgery exam and his office manger presented a quote for more than $3000 more than Medicare would pay for. I objected and she lowered the quote to about $1500. I cancelled his surgery and had the Encinitas surgeon perform the operation, all paid for by Medicare. I had to pay about $300 for the surgery center.
