I had unusually complex cases of brunescent cataracts (4+ and 4+++, weak corneal endothelium, and desire to maintain excellent close vision (-5 range). Dr. Devgan saved my sight and my life. Conventional ECCE surgery was the only recommendation from highly successful surgeons in SoCal including Kaiser Foundation who 99% of the time dealt with non-complex cases and quick surgeries using phacoemulsification procedures to extract the cataract lens which include high frequency vibrational aspects which generally do not disturb the posterior capsule or retina. However, in my case, using phaco could induce surgical or post surgical retinal detachment. ECCE (pre-phaco and femto surgical techniques were commonly used and was the only method recommended by other surgeons for 15 years). ECCE involves piercing and entering the anterior lens capsule through the cornea. This could result in a failed cornea and require a corneal transplant. ECCE also involves a very large incision, sutures, a protracted recovery and extended convalescence of many months. Greatly increased astigmatism generally results from such complex cases. Dr. Devgan perfected MSCIS surgery with 40,000 surgeries. This procedure uses a scleral tunnel technique wherein the small incision is made in the white of the eye (sclera) proximate to the lens capsule chamber and extracts the cataract lens and installs the IOL (implant lens), generally with the flap closing without sutures (I required 3 small hidden nylon sutures and one quick dissolving front suture). The operation and post surgery was painless. It did not disturb the retina as there was no strong phaco vibration involved. My corneas shrank back close to a safer thickness the day after and continued to become normal size (they were 120 micron edematous pre-surgery with weak endothelium structure). Four days post surgery I obtained corrective lens with nearly perfect vision which after 6 weeks met the exact corrective expectations of Dr. Devgan. He illustrated the mathematics of various IOL options for resolution distances per diopter of correction so I could choose the correction I wanted (3.5" inches to about 10" without glasses, then distance glasses with prime focus at 8"). Dr. Devgan has mastered every aspect of manual manipulation for cataract surgery including use of alternative devices and securing the eye's physiology without resorting to more invasive phaco and ECCE techniques in preserving vision and greatly reducing negative potential mishaps during and post surgery. I owe my sight to his superior knowledge and experience. My optical case is in the 1% difficulty of cataract surgical challenges. For the majority of cataract cases, Dr. Devgan uses the least invasive techniques, the quickest surgery while preserving all optic physiology and in my case, 100% success, no pain and extremely quick recovery.

I cannot recommend Dr. Uday Devgan highly enough. Having lived with extreme myopia since childhood, the prospect of cataract surgery was incredibly daunting for me. I saw Dr. Devgan in June for an initial evaluation, and after speaking with him, his deep expertise in handling complex, highly myopic eyes immediately put me at ease. Deepest Gratitude to Dr. Devgan and His Team If you are suffering from cataracts due to severe myopia like me, I highly recommend this place. Developing cataracts in my 40s left me feeling really depressed. It was with that heavy and anxious heart that I made my very first call to Dr. Devgan’s office, but the staff were incredibly helpful right from the start. I don't know who answered, but she told me I was too young to be getting cataract treatment. Her words felt so genuinely warm and compassionate, which I really loved. When I explained my situation and asked if other Asians like me came there for treatment, she said, 'Yes, but you’re about to be treated by one of the best, so why even ask a question like that? Don't worry and just come in!' I couldn't quite agree with her at the time, though—after all, I had simply called the number my husband gave me. When I first met Dr. Devgan, his intense confidence and passion actually made me wonder if I was in the wrong place. But after looking up his impressive background at home, I realized his confidence was completely justified. Dr. Devgan is not only highly skilled and deeply experienced, but he is also an excellent communicator. Following our initial consultation, we exchanged several text messages before I finally decided to move forward. Dr. Devgan was recommended to me by my Portland ophthalmologist since I had moved to California. I brought a plethora of vision challenges for which I had been under treatment for many years. Dr Devgan has earned his reputation as a premiere surgeon and I now understand why patients travel from all over to be in his care. His “bedside manner” is outstanding as he explains every aspect of the surgical procedure and is thorough in answering your questions, both before and after surgery. Prior to my cataract surgery, my visual acuity, corrected with glasses, was only 20/80 due to acute astigmatism. Following Dr. Devgan’s surgery to remove the cataracts and implant a specialized toric lens I am now seeing 20/15! What a miracle this feels like and I have deep gratitude for Dr. Devgan’s expertise and care.

There are doctors who are excellent at what they do, and then there are doctors who change lives. Dr. Devgan is the latter. My mom came to him with an extremely advanced cataract. Her vision had deteriorated to the point that she was effectively blind, profoundly impacting her independence and quality of life. As her son, watching that happen was heartbreaking. What Dr. Devgan did for her feels nothing short of miraculous. Within minutes of waking from her procedure, my mom could see. Not just a little better. She could see incredibly well. After living in a world that had become increasingly dark and inaccessible, suddenly she had her vision back. Her words say it better than mine ever could: “Dr. Devgan gave me a new life.” But what makes Dr. Devgan so extraordinary isn’t simply his remarkable skill as a surgeon. It’s the human being behind that skill. His bedside manner was impeccable. He was warm, patient, empathetic and reassuring. He listened to my mom, truly listened.
