About William E. Flanary
Dr. William E. Flanary grew up in Houston, TX, and completed his undergraduate studies at Texas Tech University, where he was selected to join the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology. During his time at Texas Tech, Dr. Flanary met his wife, a native Oregonian. After college, Dr. Flanary left the heat and humidity of Texas for New Hampshire, where he attended Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine. While studying at Dartmouth, Dr. Flanary discovered his love of ophthalmology. He was attracted to the advanced technological aspects of the field as well as the meaningful relationships that are forged with patients and colleagues. Dr. Flanary was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society prior to earning his medical degree. He then completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Iowa, one of the nation’s perennial top 10 ophthalmology training programs. During his residency training, Dr. Flanary served as Editor-in-Chief of Eyerounds, one of the top ophthalmology educational resources in the world.

Dr Flanary and his support staff have made me grateful throughout the process of a cataract surgery on eye number 1, my first of a pair of planned surgeries. I've been treated with professionalism and warmth, both before and after my surgery. My pre op appointments helped me understand options on such things as lens choice. Several weeks post-op, I took a very unexpected poke directly into my post-op eye from a brand new baby who was figuring out the mysteries of what to do with her brand new hands. It was a real relief to be given an immediate appointment just to be certain that adventure had not jeopardized my brand new, brighter vision. A big thank you to Dr Flanary and his team!

We are committed to maintaining a supportive atmosphere for everyone.I saw Dr. Flannery in May 2026 for a second opinion regarding cataract surgery. At the appointment the check-in was very fast and friendly and the screening tests were completed prior to my seeing the doctor. They included eye dilation. I was given no time to replace my contacts, so when the doctor finished his exam I had a lot of trouble seeing anything. That made the appointment awkward. Dr. Flannery seemed in a hurry and I did not feel I had much real feedback about my concerns re choices for cataract surgery or what might be risks/advantages of the surgery the first opinion had recommended. (Thus my appointment for a second opinion.) After the appointment I sent a message through the patient portal to clarify a question, but Dr. Flannery never bothered to answer it. Ellie, Oregon City Triage Coordinator responded that he would get back to me. He never did.
Dr. Flanery has been my eye Dr. for years. He and his team listen, are caring, professional and kind. I highly recommend.
